Why do We Need A Servolution?

TODD COLE

Campus Pastor

I know I’m kind of the “new kid” here but in a lot of ways it feels like I’ve been here a lot longer than just a couple of months. It has only been official for a couple months but our family has been connecting here at The Gathering for about 2 years!

We are definitely still getting to know people and how things work but one of the things we love most about The Gathering is how serving is a central and vital aspect of this church’s identity. We have had the opportunity over the last few years to experience literally dozens of different churches and I can confidently say that the heart that this church has for making an impact in the community for Christ through serving others is really special.

All indicators tell us that the church in America has some huge problems. People are walking away from the church in unprecedented numbers and often see Christians as bigoted and judgmental. It’s not that people don’t want to have anything to do with Jesus. In fact Jesus’ approval rating is about as high as it has ever been. Unfortunately the same can’t be said for Christians and the Church. The problem isn’t with the Church’s mission or message. The problem is with our methods. For the most part churches are still using the same methods to reach people today that they used 20, 30 and even 50 years ago. Culture has changed and the Church has to change with it.

That’s why serving people is so crucial. When we serve others in our community, people can see that we Christ-followers are for real. They see that we really do care about people and are willing to do what we can to help meet people’s needs. It’s not a new concept. Jesus Himself said “For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many.” – Matthew 20:28

I firmly believe that it is God’s desire for His Church that each one of those who are committed to following Jesus are actively engaged in using their time, talents and treasures to demonstrate His love to others through serving. Simple acts of service go a long way to help break down barriers and build relationships through which we can help people not just hear about how much they are loved by God, but help them actually feel it firsthand.

We will begin to see God do some amazing things when we follow in Jesus’ footsteps by using our time, talents and treasures to put others first and genuinely love our actual neighbors like we love ourselves. When an increasing number of us get serious about doing that consistently, God will begin to use it in huge ways to transform the lives of people who are far from Him and use us to make an impact in our community that would otherwise be impossible.

I’m excited to be part of the #GCCservolution and I can’t wait to see what God is going to do through it! If you’re not part of it yet and are ready to jump in, shoot us a message and we’ll help you get started.
